Tale of Two Carpenters: The Rader House & The Andrews House

Both of these homes date to 1920. They are side-by-side and located on the NW corner of the Avalon Place subdivision – 728 & 732 S Ingraham, though 732 is now referred to as 1010 Monroe. Both were first occupied by carpenters, William M & Bertie Rader (728) and George C & Rosa Andrews (732). Although originally single-family these large homes quickly took in multiple residents by the later 20’s which continued to this day. Both are classified as multi-tenant (and currently have the same owner). The occupant of 728 after William was Ernest & Cassie Powell. Ernest was a plasterer. I have visions of each living in and work on the home in its early days. In 1960, the directory notes 728 as the Crenshaw Apartments, with four units.
